What is CalTopo?

CalTopo is a nifty piece of mapping software that lets you view various tons of different maps, build tracks, mark waypoints, and generally makes precise navigation in the backcountry easier.

It's used by folks at avalanche centers, SAR teams (like Denali's!), and by all sorts of backcountry recreationists. I've found it to be a great tool for scouting out routes, navigating under poor visibility conditions, and generally keeping oneself on track in unfamiliar terrain.

It's not magic, and isn't a replacement for planning and experience actually ON the ground somewhere, but it's a very powerful tool and is just fun to play around with sometimes too! You can dream up all sorts of routes and see how feasible (or heinously unenjoyable) they might be.
