Down in the crevasse … what’s up?!
Finally getting around to posting some of the cool 🧊 stuff I’ve been up to for the past week in New Zealand. First on the list is ice climbing, which we did last Saturday. The weather miraculously cleared up in the Franz Josef/Fox Glacier region the one day that we had booked for a guided day of ice climbing.
We had beautiful weather, an awesome guide (shoutout Baxter from Fox Glacier Guides), and it was just our group so we got a pretty choose your own adventure type experience. Never been ice climbing before, so it was super cool to learn about how it differs from standard top rope climbing. We got to try out some different routes of varying difficulties (sending a little overhang was a weird experience with crampons and ice axe) and we also got to drop down into a big ol crevasse and climb out which was kinda sick.
Overall absolutely awesome first time out on a glacier and ice climbing. I learned a ton, had a blast, and am def gonna be revisiting some of the ideas in the future when looking into hitting mountaineering objectives.
